Black & White Gallery/Project Space is very pleased to host Sparkly Darkly - a site-specific installation by Patte Loper.
Formally trained as a painter, Loper is a conceptual artist working between several mediums to mine the histories of 20th century art. In Sparkly Darkly Loper uses iconic imagery from early surrealism and cubism as raw material that she fragments, disrupts, and dissolves into associative forms and shapes.
Visit to a Small Planet, May 5 - July 20 2017
Juliette Art Museum at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, Charleston, WV
This installation uses formal art techniques combined with a sense of hand-made science fiction. The aesthetic histories of Cubism, Theater Artaud, architectural design, protest art, and 1950’s science fiction b-movies were used as inspiration to build the work. My motivation behind the piece was to communicate with the children of this coal-mining area about renewable energy. The installation is built primarily with recycled material, and everything here will ultimately be recycled or reused in some form.
Connecting a feminist utopian science fiction lab environment with an operational stop-motion action video set and an off-grid solar panel system, this multi-layered immersive installation creates a fantastical environment wired with working sustainable technology.
Innovative Exhibit Encourages Children and their Families to Explore Self-Expression and Identity through Art-Making
New York, N.Y., June 4, 2019 – The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (212 West 83rd Street) today announced its next group of four new artists-in-residence for its hugely popular, critically-acclaimed “Art, Artists & You” exhibit. Part interactive art studio, part art exhibition, “Art, Artists & You” is where maker-space meets contemporary art. This exhibition experience is designed to encourage children and their families to explore self-expression and identity through the delights of art-making. Families can create stop motion animation, craft a model of a favorite pet, or collaborate on a massive wall hanging.
The Museum’s new artists-in-residence, Gabino A. Castelán, Patte Loper, Tijay Mohammed and Annesofie Sandal, will work in studios located directly in the exhibit, through the end of the year. Castelán develops spaces through paintings, drawings, sculpture, performance and installation. Loper creates multi-media based works in painting, sculpture, video and technology. Mohammed primarily works with African wax fabric and incorporates other assorted materials and objects. Sandal works with discarded materials, site-specific installation, photography and video.

Empathy and Craft in the 21st Century
July-August, 2017
Participating artists: Ali Yas, Ahmed Salameh, Bayan Kiwan, Diala Al Daghlise, Diran Malatjalian, Ethan Murrow, Hannah Jabare, Khaldoun Hijazin, Lina Salah, Mayada Abu-Qdais, Patte Loper, Sama Shahrouri, Tasneem Jaabo, Wujoud
Exhibition was based on workshops led by myself, Diran Malatjalian, Khaldoun Hijazin and Ethan Murrow. Preparations for the exhibition began with a workshop led by myself and Khaldoun Hijazin examining intersectionality as a tool to resist entrenched hierarchies. This felt particularly potent at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman, a city and country at the crossroads of the Middle East, witnessing and ameliorating the interlocked and continuing refugee crises of the 20th and 21st centuries.
EFA Open Studios Thursday, Oct. 20 - Sat. Oct. 22. Three days, 75 artist studios!
A series of lectures and workshops hosted by the University of Jordan in Amman Jordan. Collaboration with Ethan Murrow, Khaldoun Hijazine, Diala Al Dahlise, and University of Jordan art students.
I was invited to give a lecture at my undergraduate alma mater, Florida State University, where my father was also a professor in the Geophysical Fluids Dynamics Institute for many years. It felt like a homecoming and it was such a surreal experience to go back to the FAB building. There I met with amazing students and faculty in the art department. For anyone looking for a fully funded MFA complete with giant studios and a culturally rich community, FSU is your place.
The photo is of a student's stream-of-consciousness illustration of the lecture! Love this!

My last exhibition at Platform's Third St. Space in Pioneers Square, the gallery is moving to online and more nomadic exhibitions. Looking very much forward to the next chapter with the inimitable Stephen Lyons and Platform!
Art, AIDS, America opens in Atlanta at the Zuckerman Museum. The link here is to a conversation between Kia Labeija and Sur Rodney addressing the artists being mostly recognizable names in the art world, and the ensuing controversy regarding the lack of fair representation of Black artists, particularly given the impact AIDS has had on this community. I am very proud to be a part of this show, given the way that it has created a platform for this conversation, and the way the exhibition itself has been revamped to address the valid concerns of the Black Lives Matter movement.
It has been an incredible honor to be one of the last artists selected to exhibit at the historic venue, Suyama Space in Seattle. The space has hosted over 50 site-specific installations in its gorgeous Bell-Town space since its inception in 2000.
My work investigated and addressed large urban planning projects of the 20th and 21st century through a DIY aesthetic and use of recycled and scavenged material. For more information and images by Seattle's Mark Woods, click on the link!
I could not be more proud to be a part of this historical exhibition. Many thanks to Rock Hushka and David Katz for including my work and putting together this show!
Sprawling, complex, and interwoven, this evolving show at the Drawing Center included all 50-odd artists from Open Sessions. Power Exchange Unit was created in response to prompts from curators Lisa Sigal and Nova Benway.
This show features the Open Sessions 2 artists again! This time in Texas, and it's big...
Terrific article about the Blue Star Contemporary exhibit!
Fascinating essay (albeit read through Google Translate) about the recent development of a 'future primitive' in contemporary art - "Structure For Ruining Paintings" is used as an example.
Ground breaking exhibition curated by Rock Huschka, chief curator and curator of contemporary and Northwest art at Tacoma Art Museum and Dr. Jonathan Katz, director of the Visual Studies Doctoral Program at the University at Buffalo SUNY. There is a gorgeous catalog and I am very excited to be included in this historical show.

The exhibition Amalassunta testing. Osvaldo & Licini ten artists , conceived and curated by Christian Caliandro specifically for the Gallery of Contemporary Art "Osvaldo Licini" of Ascoli Piceno and organized by ArteContemporaneaPicena part of the project in Art Center , is geared to put dialogue in national and international artists - three Americans, an Austrian and six Italians - with the original figure of the painter Marches. This dialogue will be developed through an exhibition that, by reconfiguring the layout and the layout of the paintings in the gallery Licini, will build a visual narrative, a narrative made up of references to images, references, suggestions and story lines.
I will be participating in The Drawing Center's Open Sessions, two-year program involving artists working in a variety of disciplines, Open Sessions artists will be participating in exhibitions in The Drawing Center’s Lab Space and other venues, as well as studio visits, public programs, and informal gatherings. Expanded Summary:
The work seen in this show will be paintings and a multimedia site-specific work comprised of drawing, video, and sculptural components. Using automatic building and drawing techniques, Loper will create a piece in the gallery using the surrounding natural environment of the area as a departure point, from water pathways moving through terrain and deep woods to manicured landscapes and land used for agriculture. Because the work is generated intuitively, using surrealist automatism as a guiding principle, the work often takes unexpected forms, exploring the intersecting terrains of landscape, utopian architecture, and bodily organism.
For this SPACES Vault installment, Kristin Rogers has curated a selection of video works under the title "DeStilled Lives." The videos feature an assortment of quiet (still) "lives" that awaken into contemplative, cautious even, movement. Awakened, yet not immediately sure of their surroundings, these so-called DeStilled Lives move through their environments-through their narration-with a sense of quiet determination and lived awareness.

Platform Gallery presents new work by Patte Loper for her fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Long been interested in the interface between the natural and the constructed world, Patte begins her paintings by first creating models made from pieced-together scraps of found materials such as discarded cardboard, cloth, sticks, string and putty. She then makes observational paintings using the models as subjects for portraits.

A
collaboration between the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA) and
Aichi University, Nagoya, Japan, "Forms in Flux" is an exhibition of
three artists from each respective institution whose work addresses concepts of
transformation, and whose collective practices become newly recontextualized
among their fellow exhibitors. "Forms in Flux" provides a meeting
place for something new to be created from two geographically distant locations,
and the transformative nature of each artist's work is heightened in the
physical and artistic context of their foreign counterparts. Just as the
collaboration itself has fluctuated from its inception, so does the work of
these accomplished faculty members, whose work breaches communication,
intuition and alteration.
This
exhibition and all related events are free and open to the public.
